Music is an art that, in one guise or another, permeates every culture. Whether it is the complex, emotionally demanding orchestral piece or a simple folk song, music has been credited with the ability to elicit an emotional response in the listener and even change behavior. Its use in such diverse areas as advertising, geriatric care and psychotherapy testify to the power of this ancient art form.
In order to understand the structure of a musical composition, it is helpful to analyze its components. Generally, these are called “the elements of music.” Various authors have defined these in different ways, but the majority of the definitions contain similar elements. These include dynamics (volume) and tempo; rhythm; pitch, or tone; and timbre, or the color of sound. Some also include other aspects such as articulation, or the manner in which notes are played and words pronounced.
Identify the specific nuances of your chosen genre of music, and incorporate them into your analysis. For example, if you are writing about rock and roll, explore the reasons behind its rise to prominence, including its origins and development of instruments. Also, study the impact of the changing economy on the genre’s success.
Discuss the relationship between a composer’s life and his or her work. However, do not attempt to include everything that affected a composer’s life; this can obfuscate the discussion. Describe the societal influences that may have helped shape a particular composition, and be sure to mention any specific effects it had on the listener.
Determine the purpose of using music in certain contexts, such as advertisements. What is the best way to convey a message with music? What does the use of a certain tune in a commercial tell you about the product or service?
Research the effect of music on mood. Does it have an affect on concentration when studying? Is it better to work with or without background noise? If so, what kind of music do people prefer to study with?
Write an essay on the effect of music on human emotions. The emotional power of music has been the subject of many psychological studies, and it is well documented that the perception of a familiar melody can cause a strong reaction in the listener. Several studies have also looked at how changes in the dynamics of music-the volume, or amplitude, of the music; and its rhythm, or pulse, can affect one’s enjoyment and emotional response.
The study of music is an important field of study for students in any discipline, from the sciences to the social sciences. It is a highly adaptable medium, blending easily with other art forms and often lending itself to alliances with language, as in song, or with physical movement, as in dance. Throughout history, the power of music has been celebrated in various cultures; and it is still an important part of our everyday lives. The variety of forms and styles that exist today is testament to its universal appeal.
